Hiring an interior designer is one of the larger discretionary purchases most people make, and yet almost nobody interviews the way they would before hiring a contractor or a financial advisor. You meet someone whose Instagram looks nice, they seem friendly, and a few weeks later you've signed a contract without ever asking the questions that would have told you what you were actually buying.
I learned this the hard way. When I hired a designer for my own space, it took a week just to get a verbal description of what the room could look like — no images, no renderings, just words on a phone call. The reason took me a while to understand: the visualization I cared about most wasn't something my designer produced in-house. It was outsourced. If I had asked the right questions upfront, I'd have known that going in.
Below are the twelve questions I now tell every friend to ask before signing. They're grouped by category, and the goal isn't to trip up a designer — good designers will answer all of these happily. The goal is to understand exactly what you're paying for, how long it will take, and where the money and time actually go.
Process and Timeline Questions
This is where the most important and least-asked questions live. Start here.
1. Who actually produces my visualizations? This is the single most revealing question you can ask, and most homeowners never think to ask it. Many designers — including excellent, reputable ones — outsource renderings to a dedicated rendering studio or a junior freelancer. If the answer is "we have a studio we work with" or "our 3D partner handles that," you now understand why the timeline is measured in weeks and why revisions are slow and costly. There's nothing wrong with the practice, but you deserve to know that the deliverable you care about most is being produced by someone you'll never meet.
2. How long does each round of revisions take? When you ask for the sofa in linen instead of velvet, does that change land in an hour, a day, or two weeks? If visualizations are outsourced, each revision goes back through the same pipeline and the same queue. Get a specific number, not "we're pretty responsive."
3. How many revision rounds are included in the fee? This is where budgets quietly explode. Many contracts include two or three rounds and then bill per additional round — often at rendering-studio rates of $1,500 to $3,000 per room. If you're someone who likes to explore options, this line item matters enormously.

Pricing Questions
Designers price in wildly different ways, and the structure matters as much as the number.
4. Is this a flat fee or hourly, and what does that cover? Flat-fee arrangements give you predictability; hourly arrangements can be fairer for small scopes but harder to forecast. Ask for the specific deliverables tied to the fee, in writing.
5. What triggers cost overruns? Ask directly: "What are the three most common reasons your projects come in over the original estimate?" An honest designer will tell you — extra revision rounds, scope creep, client indecision, contractor surprises. Their answer tells you how they run projects.
6. Do you receive trade discounts, and do you pass them on? Designers often get 20 to 40 percent off to-the-trade pricing on furniture and finishes. Some pass the savings to you, some keep the margin as part of their compensation, some split it. There's no single right answer, but you should know the arrangement before you commit.
Scope Questions
"Full service" means different things to different designers. Pin it down.
7. Do you manage contractors, and what does that involve? Some designers coordinate every trade and stand on-site during installation. Others hand you a plan and a shopping list and wish you luck. Both are legitimate services — but they cost very different amounts and leave you with very different amounts of work.
8. What does "project management" actually mean in your contract? This phrase is doing a lot of invisible work in most proposals. Does it mean scheduling trades and resolving disputes, or does it mean forwarding you the plumber's number? Get specifics.
Portfolio Questions
Anyone can show you their three best rooms. Push past the highlight reel.
9. Can you show me a project similar to mine in scope and budget? A stunning $200,000 whole-home renovation tells you nothing about how they'll handle your single-room, $12,000 refresh. Ask to see something that matches your actual project.
10. Can you tell me about a project that went wrong and how you handled it? This is the best question in the entire list. Every designer with real experience has had a project go sideways — a delayed shipment, a contractor who vanished, a client who changed direction late. How they talk about it reveals their honesty, their problem-solving, and whether they take ownership or blame everyone else.
Communication Questions
Most designer relationships that sour do so over communication, not taste.
11. What's your typical response time? During an active project you'll have questions weekly. Knowing whether "I'll get back to you" means hours or days prevents a lot of frustration later.
12. What's your preferred communication method? Some designers live in email, some in project-management apps, some only take scheduled calls. Match this against how you like to work.
The Move That Changes Every One of These Conversations
Here's something I'd do before the first meeting even happens: generate a handful of AI concepts of your actual room. When my designer needed a week just to describe my space verbally, the core problem was that we were negotiating over words. "Warm but modern" means five different things to five different people. If I had walked in with three images showing exactly what warm-but-modern meant to me, the entire relationship would have started from a shared visual reference instead of an argument about vocabulary.
Arriving with visual direction changes the answers to almost every question above. Revision rounds shrink because you already know what you want. Timelines compress because the exploration phase is done. Cost overruns from indecision largely disappear. And you can evaluate a designer's response much better when you can point at an image and say "can you execute this?" instead of hoping your description survives the translation into someone else's rendering pipeline.
What the Answers Should Tell You
None of these twelve questions has a single correct answer. A designer who outsources visualization isn't a worse designer — they're most designers. A designer who bills hourly isn't hiding anything. The point of the interview is to understand the shape of what you're buying so there are no surprises three weeks and several thousand dollars in.
The pattern I'd watch for is defensiveness. A confident, experienced designer answers all twelve of these openly, including the uncomfortable ones about outsourcing, overruns, and projects that went wrong. If a question makes someone bristle, that reaction is itself an answer. And whatever you decide, do the visual homework first — it's the cheapest, fastest way to make every subsequent conversation more honest and more productive.
