The difference between a disappointing AI room render and a stunning one is rarely the tool — it's usually the prompt. A vague instruction produces a generic result. A specific, considered prompt produces something that feels like it was designed for your actual space.

We ran these 20 prompts across multiple different rooms — living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens — collecting the ones that consistently produced photorealistic, usable, and room-appropriate results. Use them as written, or adapt them to your space.

The Anatomy of a Good Design Prompt

Before the list: the formula. The best AI interior design prompts specify three things:

  • Style name — a recognized design aesthetic (Japandi, Scandinavian, Art Deco, etc.)
  • Material palette — the dominant textures and materials (oak, linen, concrete, velvet, marble)
  • Atmospheric mood — the feeling and light quality (warm evening light, airy and calm, dramatic and editorial)

The more precisely you describe these three dimensions, the better the result. Now, the prompts.

"Vague prompts produce generic rooms. Specific prompts produce your room."

Tips for Getting Even Better Results

A few techniques that consistently improve AI room design outputs:

  • Add light direction — "warm morning sun from the left" or "dramatic side lighting" adds depth and mood.
  • Reference a focal point — "centered around a fireplace" or "organized around the bay window" helps the AI anchor the composition.
  • Specify what to exclude — "no overhead lighting, floor lamps only" or "no patterns, solid colours throughout" narrows the result.
  • Use photographic terms — "architectural photography style, wide angle" or "editorial interior shot" shifts the rendering aesthetic toward more professional-looking results.

The best prompt is one you iterate on. Run a generation, study the result, adjust the prompt, run again. Within three or four variations you'll typically arrive at something that genuinely captures what you had in mind.
